Hello,

If you mean pulmonary tuberculosis with PTB you need to know this is a very severe and serious infection of the lungs and you should not stop treatment unless you have allergic reaction or severe side effects to it. Stopping the medications prematurely will make the infection progress and also may cause resistance of the infection to the medications (the medications might not work when you restart them).

The fact that you started to have improvement of the cough it means the medication is effective but not that the infection is cleared.
A patient needs to take the medications for 6-9 months to make sure the infection is cured.

Please talk to your doctor and restart the treatment as soon as possible and as long as needed, do the needed and recommended follow ups as your doctor recommends and any possible side effects of the medications you will need to talk with your doctor and not do medication changes on your own as this increases the risk of serious complications with the infection.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr. Antoneta Zotaj, General & Family Physician
